For the week of March 22, 2005 - Determined to Make Things Happen

The guests of Franciscan Outreach are nothing if not resourceful.  This week, we spotlight a guest whose resourcefulness, coupled with persistence, has helped her to improve the quality of her life in several different ways.

When our case managers first met this woman last fall, she was very concerned about housing.  She and her husband were living in a building that was literally falling apart.  (The building has now been condemned.)  The woman's husband has some serious medical issues and can't get around very well.  So the woman took responsibility for finding other options.

She did much of the work on her own.  Ambryn recalls her bringing leads on various housing programs and reports on conversations with the staff of those programs to many of their meetings.  Ambryn helped her to organize the resources that she had found, which made it possible for her to follow up consistently.  And that she did, both with Franciscan Outreach case managers and with the programs to which she was applying.

At the same time, Ambryn connected her with day programs through another organization.  The woman has been very active in humanities classes and writing groups.  She got a scholarship through this organization to take additional classes.  She also connected with a different organization and got involved with self-improvement classes.  She is actively pursuing knowledge, about the world and about herself.  She also uses the day program's computers to find more options and resources that are available.  As a very social person, this woman has really thrived from having somewhere to go.

The number one concern, though, was housing.  The woman and her husband were accepted for an apartment in senior housing, but could not claim success just yet.  First, they had to obtain the proper identification documents.  Franciscan Outreach has helped them through this slow and difficult process.  Both of the guests were able to obtain proof of birth, but getting both social security cards has proven more arduous.  With our case managers' help, the woman's husband has submitted three applications to receive his card.  He has gotten no response.

Our resourceful guest, however, has not been sitting and waiting quietly as the plaster from her ceiling rains down into the apartment.  She called the senior housing provider day in and day out to check on their status.  In part due to this persistence and in part due to our case managers' assurances that they have been doing everything possible to get the necessary documents, the couple was able to move into a new apartment on March 9th.  Our case managers also connected them with an organization that helps older adults with moving and providing furniture.

Though they are now in a safe space, complete with necessary furnishings, our guests' story is not yet finished.  They continue to work with our case management staff to deal with the bureaucracy that stands in their way.  We will continue to help them with whatever they need until they are able to stand on their own.

For the week of March 15 - New ways to participate in Lawyers United for the Homeless

2004 was the first year of a new group called Lawyers United for the Homeless. Twelve Chicago lawyers joined their resources and raised a total of $12,533 that was used to make life better for the homeless. Because of their generosity, Franciscan Outreach ended the year in the black and without debt. The new giving levels are...

  • Law Student Member, for a donation of $20

  • Lawyers United Associate, for a donation of $250

  • Lawyers United Partner, for a donation of $500

  • Lawyers United Senior Partner, for a donation of $1,000

  • Lawyers United Miracle Worker, for a donation of $5,000

For more details on these giving levels, see www.franoutreach.org/LawyersUnited.htm#levels

What are the goals of Lawyers United for 2005? See the details at www.franoutreach.org/LawyersUnited.htm#2005goals

Would you like to invite a lawyer you know to join Lawyers United for the Homeless? Send the a link to www.franoutreach.org/LawyersUnited/htm (and not to this page, which changes every week).

For the week of March 8, 2005 - Lent, St. Leo the Great, and Operation Rice Bowl

"Any time is the right time for works of charity, but these days of Lent provide a special encouragement. Those who want to be present at the Lord's Passover in holiness of mind and body should seek above all to win this grace, for charity contains all other virtues and covers a multitude of sins."

... says Saint Leo the Great, pope from 440 AD to 461, as quoted in the Liturgy of the Hours for the Office of Readings for Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent. He continues:

"Let us now extend to the poor and those afflicted in different ways a more open-handed generosity, so that God may be thanked through many voices and the relief of the needy supported by our fasting. No act of devotion on the part of the faithful gives God more pleasure than that which is lavished on his poor. Where he finds charity with its loving concern, there he recognizes the reflection of his own fatherly care."

Many different voices thank God each night as our dinner at the Marquard Center concludes and in the morning as our guests leave our shelter. Those who receive help from our case managers are especially grateful for the benefits they receive. Although we don't hold any religious services for our guests, they know that we are inspired by God's love, and they thank God accordingly. You can join in this good work by your financial support. Without your support, our doors would close and people would go hungry, without a bed, and without a friend. Use our on-line donation page to participate or mail your donation today, while Lent is still upon us. Take a few moments to share God's love with those who are truly in need!

Another way you can participate ~ if your parish is participating in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent, you can designate the local portion of your collection, which is 25% of the total you collect,  for Franciscan Outreach Association. Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services. 75% of the funds collected go towards international development projects; while 25% stays in the diocese in which it's collected to alleviate hunger at home.

When you return your yellow form to the Office of Peace & Justice, state the total amount you've collected and that you're sending the local share to Franciscan Outreach. They know who we are and that we qualify as a recipient of funds for hunger relief. Then send a check for the 25% of the total to us and a check for 75% of the total to them. If you have any questions, direct them to Adrienne Curry in the Office of Peace and Justice.  Not participating in Operation Rice Bowl? Ask Adrienne how to participate next year.

For the week of March 2, 2005 - Help Sr. Patricia turn your Used Printer Cartridges into Sheets for our Shelter

Sr. Patricia Doebber, OSF, of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Frankfort, Illinois, is a retired sister with a new ministry. She collects used printer cartridges and sends them into back to the manufacturer for a refund. She then uses the money she collects to buy sheets for our overnight shelter.

Any kinds of computer printer or photocopier cartridges qualify - ink jet, bubble jet, toner, etc.

Send them to us at Franciscan Outreach at 1645 W. LeMoyne, Chicago 60622 or drop them off at St. Peter's Church in the Loop at 110 W. Madison.  Diana will deliver them to Sr. Patricia who will send them away for a refund.

So turn your used cartridges into sheets ~ its almost like turning water into wine!  Your efforts will be appreciated by the staff and guests here at Franciscan Outreach as well as Sr. Patricia.

For the week of February 22, 2005 - Calling all New Donors! Double your gift with a One-to-One Matching Grant

Great News! We have received a challenge grant from the Raskob Foundation.

If we can raise $5,000 in new funds, we will receive an additional $5,000 from the Raskob Foundation. These funds must be "new funds" from "outside sources" for the purpose of "staff salaries/benefits, volunteer stipends, utilities, community living expenses, and program supplies" of the Marquard Center soup kitchen, Franciscan House shelter, or the Case Management Program.

What are "new funds?"

  • a gift from a donor who has never donated to us before

  • a gift of $1,000 from a donor who's highest annual gift since 1998 has been $100 would result in $900 of "new funds."

  • a grant from a foundation that hasn't made a grant to us yet

  • a corporate gift from a corporation that hasn't made a gift before

This would be a perfect opportunity for Lawyers who may wish to join Lawyers United for the Homeless for the first time. Its a great way to show how Lawyers can get together to do something good for the homeless! For more information on Lawyers United for the Homeless, visit www.franoutreach.org/LawyersUnited.htm.

This challenge grant is in addition to an outright grant for $5,000 that the Raskob Foundation has made to us. Thank you Raskob Foundation!

Any questions? Contact Diana at (773) 278-6724

Spread the word! If you're putting this into an email, send people to the Archives page at www.franoutreach.org/what's_new_archives_17th.htm, since we'll move it to that location when we post next week's What's New. Don't let this opportunity pass us by!

For the week of February 15, 2005 - Introducing the Wednesday Bridge Program!

For more than seven years, the STAIRS program of the Heartland Health Outreach (HHO) would bring case managers and substance abuse counselors to the Marquard Center every Wednesday.  Over the years, we brought medical, mental health outreach, and art therapy services on board for Wednesdays as well.  As of last December, due to organizational restructuring, STAIRS was no longer able to offer their services at our site.

We recognized that the Wednesday program meant a lot to our guests.  Each week, they could come up to the Marquard Center, meet up with friends, have some snacks, and make use of a variety of services in a relaxed and familiar environment.  We didn't want to take that away from them and so we decided that we would continue to offer the same services, even without the STAIRS personnel.

Beginning in December, Ambryn began to lead the weekly Motivational Meeting.  She, Nick, and Roy took on the commitment to meet with all those seeking case management, even though they could no longer share the work with STAIRS case managers.  Fortunately, our other collaborators are still on board: nurses from HHO provide clinic services; a mental health outreach worker from HHO meets with guests; Br. Joe Manning offers an art therapy group; occasionally we have Veterans' Administration staff on-site to help those eligible for VA services.

Our Franciscan Outreach Wednesday day program has been a tremendous success.  Motivational group participation has remained steady, as has use of the collaborative services.  Our case managers have maintained their previous levels of Wednesday service, while covering the case management services that had been provided by STAIRS.  This has more than doubled their Wednesday caseload.  In December, Franciscan Outreach case managers had 137 Wednesday meetings with clients.  In January, they had 119.

The only thing that our program was missing was a name.  In order to increase our guests' sense of ownership of the program, we put the question to them.  Forty-eight individuals offered 164 entries in a contest to find the best name.  Last Friday, the winners were announced.  Dave Smith (right) submitted the grand prize winner: the Wednesday Bridge Program.  He says that he had fun thinking up suggestions and that our program has helped him immensely.

The case management team chose the Wednesday Bridge Program because they found it to be an appropriate metaphor for the day's activities.  The Wednesday program bridges the gap between guests and the services that they need by bringing many services together in a safe space.  Further, the case managers see their work as providing a bridge from where our guests have been to where they want to be, helping them surpass the obstacles in between.  The case management relationship is one of assistance through transition. The bridge can be one from hopelessness to hope. In the future, we hope to have enough funding to add even more case managers so that we can help even more guests.

For the week of February 8 - Increasing our Availability to our Guests

For years, our case managers have been going to Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph in the evenings to conduct outreach among the shelter guests.  They meet with guests, ask about any needs that they might have, and explain how they might be able to help with case management.  In order to follow up with the case managers, however, guests had to come to the Marquard Center.

Now, at least three mornings of the week, guests can meet with case managers at the shelter itself.  Roy, Ambryn, Fr. Bill, and Br. Mike are all putting in daytime hours in the new shelter office space.  Generally, case managers are available from 9 am to noon.  On at least one of the mornings, two case managers will be available to work with guests.  Our case managers' presence adds to the daytime services already provided by our Chicago Housing for Health Partnership (CHHP) case managers, who work with chronically medically ill individuals, and the three mental health outreach workers who work with our guests as part of the Shelter Linkage Project, though employed by other agencies.

We are paying close attention to supervising the guests who come to the shelter to meet with their case managers.  We would like to use the kitchen as a reception area during the day.  In order to keep our guests occupied and calm while they wait, we would like to install a TV for them to watch.  With a VCR/DVD player, we could also show training or motivational videos.

We are looking for a TV in the range of 24"-27" that can be mounted on the wall. If you don't have a TV to donate, could you donate the funds and we would buy one?  We could buy a 25" or 27" TV for $180, with a wall mount costing an additional $100 and a VCR/DVD player for $80. You would be making a trip to see a case manager more pleasant for our guests, reducing conflicts between guests, providing the tools for showing educational videos, and creating a welcoming atmosphere at our shelter during the day.

To donate a TV, wall mount, or VCR/DVD player, contact Diana at (773) 278-6724 . Thank you for your help our guests improve their lives.

For the week of February 1 - Words of Wisdom

Several months ago, two of our case managers began to draw on the chalkboard in the case management office at the Marquard Center.  Inspirational quotations accompanied the winter scene.  Before long, the board became a community project, with staff, full-time volunteers, and guests all contributing.

The quotes currently on the board include the following:

"Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die

Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." ~Langston Hughes

"Nothing comes from doing nothing." ~Shakespeare

"Accept the challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory!"

~Gen. George S. Patton

"Do not fret over problems you cannot solve." ~Dave

Send us your quotes!  They can be words that have inspired you or you can make up your own--anything that may encourage our guests through their struggles.  Email quotes to Leah to be included in this communal project.  Please, no chain letters.

For the week of January 25 - Save the Dates, Volunteer for a Pooch Walk, Send Candy to a Loved One

Save the date for our Berghoff Dinner on Monday, March 28.  Family-owned and operated for over 100 years, The Berghoff has become a favorite destination for generations of diners from Chicago and around the world.  Come and find out why!  To learn more about The Berghoff, see www.berghoff.com.

Then, on Wednesday, May 11, we hope that you will join us for our Spring Dinner  at the Chicago Yacht Club Enjoy our annual raffle while taking in a breathtaking view from the shore of Lake Michigan.  For samples of the view and other information, visit www.chicagoyachtclub.org.

St. Francis loved animals and so do we!  Now even your family's dog can participate in helping the homeless!  We are going to be doing a Pooch Walk on the Riverwalk in Naperville on Saturday, September 24th For a look at the Riverwalk, see (www.napervilleriverwalk.com.) In addition to a mile and a half walk, the day will include games and contests for your dog, a silent auction, face painting, and lots of other fun activities.  A Franciscan Friar will be on hand to bless your furry friend.  We need volunteers to organize the day in order to make it happen.  If you are interested in helping, contact Diana at (773) 278-6724.  Diana can send you a description of the event and what kinds of things volunteers can do.  If we have enough adult volunteers, this will be a great opportunity for youth groups.

We need silent auction (and raffle) prizes for all three of these events!  Please consider whether there is anything that you could donate or whether you could ask your friends, family members, or employer about donating.  Those with potential prizes should contact Diana at (773) 278-6724

Valentine's Day is also coming up.  We are again offering to send candy grams to your friends and loved ones for donations of $15 or more.  For details, click here.

For the week of January 18 - Franciscan Outreach on the News!

On Monday, January 17th, when it was very, very cold outside, Dana Kozlov of CBS2 Chicago visited our shelter and talked with Fr. Larry about how the cold weather affects the homeless of Chicago. You can view the video and listen to the interview at  http://wbbm.dayport.com/launcher/9696/?tf=video_player.tpl

If that link doesn't work for you, open up Internet Explorer and go to the complete list of CBS 2 Chicago videos at http://cbs2chicago.com/video/    Look for "City Homeless Shelter Filled to Capacity" on January 18.

For the week of January 11 - 2004 Emergency Services

A guest named Maurice had this to say about Franciscan Outreach: “I’ve been helped when I needed it and was treated kindly when dealing with staff, so I like it.”  When we get response like this, we know that we have been fulfilling our mission.  In our emergency services programs, we serve those who find themselves in immediate need in a warm and caring environment.

Just what was the magnitude of our emergency services provision in 2004?

Franciscan House of Mary and Joseph provided...

  • 90,105 shelter nights over the course of the year (12,637 for women and 77,468 for men).

  • Our shelter guests ate approximately 87,489 suppers of soup and a sandwich and

  • 87,489 breakfasts

  • but we had to turn away a guest in need of shelter 1,066 times because we were filled

At the Marquard Center, we served...

  • 50,427 full dinners to hungry men, women, and children.

  • Guests took 1,312 showers in our facilities.

  • Our full-time volunteers washed and dried 1,991 bags of guests' laundry.

We're still counting how many one-on-one visits our case managers had with our guests. Those numbers will be available soon.

How does this compare to last year?

  • shelter nights are up .7%

  • turn-aways are up 4.8%

  • meals at the Marquard Center are down 3.7%

  • laundry at the Marquard Center is up 3.1%

We're doing lots of good work! Thanks for your help! Please keep up your support so that it can continue!
