What's New Archives for

April 6, 2004 to June 29, 2004

For the week of June 29, 2004 - Gratitude is an Attitude!

Some of our guests at the Marquard Center dining room recently shared these words of gratitude for us to convey to our donors and supporters:

"In appreciation for all the wonderful things you guys do for us all year 'round, thank you from the bottom of my heart.  God bless you."

"From a long-time person, you helped [make] life easier."

"Thank you for your help. It's nice to have a place to go in a time of need."

"I truly thank you for your kindness.  Your gift is really a blessing."

"Two words--Thank You."

"I like the food."

"You are heaven sent."

We at Franciscan Outreach share the sentiment of these guests' comments.  We thank all of the supporters who help make it possible for us to continue in our work.

For the week of June 22 - Needed at the Marquard Center--Can you help us out?

At Franciscan Outreach Association, we try to do all that we can to affirm our guests' dignity and help them to maintain a sense of self-respect and self-worth.  Providing the city's only free drop-off laundry service at the Marquard Center is one way that we work towards this goal.  Twice each week, guests drop off a bag of laundry to be washed, dried, and picked up at their convenience.

The washers and dryers that we currently try to use have been here for at least 10 years.  Some of them barely work.  Some don't work at all anymore.   From January 1998 through the end of May 2004, we washed and dried 8,287 loads of laundry for our guests!  The machines have served us well.  But now we are looking for replacements.

We need two heavy-duty, large capacity washers and dryers, preferably gas-operated.  It doesn't matter whether they are front- or top-loading.  If you think you might be able to help us (and our guests) out, please contact Fr. Manny at (773) 278-6724 or frmanny@franoutreach.org

UPDATE: We have obtained one washer/dryer set.  We still need one more of each.

Can't help with the washer/dryers?  Maybe you can help with something else.  We also need several gallons of latex semi-gloss paint in light colors so we can put a fresh coat or two on the walls of the dining room.  Again, contact Fr. Manny.

UPDATE: We have received a generous donation of the needed paint.

For the week of June 15 - Words of Catholic Social Teaching

At Franciscan Outreach, we strive in our work to manifest the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.  Below are some quotations from Catholic Social Teaching writings.  Click on the title of the source to read it in its entirety on the website of the Office of Peace and Justice of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

That so many people are poor in a nation as rich as ours is a social and moral scandal that we cannot ignore.   Economic Justice for All #16

Now a man can scarcely arrive at the needed sense of responsibility, unless his living conditions allow him to become conscious of his dignity, and to rise to his destiny by spending himself for God and for others. But human freedom is often crippled when a man encounters extreme poverty, just as it withers when he indulges in too many of life's comforts and imprisons himself in a kind of splendid isolation.  The Church in the Modern World  #31

The primary purpose of this special commitment to the poor is to enable them to become active participants in the life of society. It is to enable all persons to share in and contribute to the common good. The "option for the poor," therefore, is not an adversarial slogan that pits one group or class against another. Rather it states that the deprivation and powerlessness of the poor wounds the whole community. The extent of their suffering is a measure of how far we are from being a true community of persons. These wounds will be healed only by greater solidarity with the poor and among the poor themselves.   Economic Justice for All #88

It will be necessary above all to abandon a mentality in which the poor - as individuals and as peoples - are considered a burden, as irksome intruders trying to consume what others have produced... The advancement of the poor constitutes a great opportunity for the moral, cultural and even economic growth of all humanity.   The Hundredth Year (Donders) #28

The basis for all that the Church believes about the moral dimensions of economic life is its vision of the transcendent worth -- the sacredness -- of human beings. The dignity of the human person, realized in community with others, is the criterion against which all aspects of economic life must be measured. ...Human personhood must be respected with a reverence that is religious. When we deal with each other, we should do so with the sense of awe that arises in the presence of something holy and sacred. For that is what human beings are: we are created in the image of God (Gn 1:27). Economic Justice for All, #28

The principles of Catholic Social Teaching include promoting the dignity of the human person, an option for the poor, community and common good, and the participation of all in the life of society. That pretty much describes the basis for all we do here at Franciscan Outreach. You can participate by volunteering or donating.

For the week of May 25, 2004 - How Many are Veterans?

This coming Monday, as we remember those veterans who died serving their country in the military, let us not forget those who fought beside the fallen who are now homeless.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that on any given night, 299,321 veterans are homeless.  According to numbers released by the Interagency Council on the Homeless in 1999, at least 23% of homeless individuals are veterans.  At Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph, the number of veterans responding to our quarterly surveys ranges from 20-30%.

John (pictured left) and Tom (pictured right) are two guests of the Marquard Center Soup Kitchen who are veterans.

For the week of May 4 - Lawyers United for the Homeless

Announcing ...

a new group sponsored by

            Franciscan Outreach Association called...

Lawyers United for the Homeless

If you're a busy lawyer, you may not have time to volunteer at our soup kitchen, shelter, or at a legal aid office. You can still make a difference in the lives of homeless men and women by joining with other lawyers in helping approximately 6,000 different homeless individuals each year.

Franciscan Outreach Association has started a new group called Lawyers United for the Homeless that makes it easy for lawyers to help the homeless. Its easy to be a member. Volunteering is optional. Meetings are optional

What qualifies you for membership is a donation of $1,000 -- small enough for most successful lawyers but large enough so that the aggregate donations of all members will have a significant impact. Your donations will help keep homeless men and women alive in the short run and help them find whatever they need to make their lives better in the long run.

Imagine -- if 100 lawyers join Lawyers United for the Homeless by making a donation of $1,000 each in 2004, that's $100,000. Since Franciscan Outreach raised $1,036,475 in 2003 but had expenses of $1,140,513, donations from Lawyers United for the Homeless will help ensure that all the good work continues.

Want to make an even bigger difference? Spread the word about Lawyers United for the Homeless to other lawyers. Just think!  If 300 lawyers join, the amount raised would be $300,000. With this amount, we could expand our services to be of even more help to our guests in building a better life.

What benefits do you get as a member of Lawyers United for the Homeless? Find out at Lawyers United for the Homeless.

For the week of April 27, 2004 - Good Luck, Sister Pam!

Today, after 7 1/2 years of dedicated service to Franciscan Outreach and our guests, Sr. Pam Falter, our Director of Case Management Services, says goodbye.  Like the hundreds of poor and homeless guests whom she has assisted, she will move on to the next part of her life's journey.

Sr. Pam says that her time at Franciscan Outreach has changed her life. It has deepened her Franciscan charism.  Her efforts at making our guests feel welcomed, loved, accepted, and supported have helped hundreds to change their own lives.  One guest, Mary, gave this explanation of what she likes about Sr. Pam:

"Well, she always has a smile.  She always talks to you.  She’s a nun lady.  She’s married to God.  And she’s real sweet....She always make me feel happy.  She makes me feel loved.  That’s what I love about here.  She’s a real person.  But I always depend on her and she helped me out this time around. ...She made me feel real welcome and I love her."

Mary is far from alone in her love for Sr. Pam.  She will be missed by guests and staff alike at Franciscan Outreach.  But we know that the time has come for her to move on.  She will be returning to her hometown of St. Louis, where she will be closer to her community, the Franciscan Sisters of our Lady of Perpetual Help.  After a summer break, she hopes to return to the homeless services field in St. Louis.  We know that all with whom she comes in contact will be blessed by her presence.  We thank her for her presence in our lives and wish her well in everything that she does!

For the week of April 13 - Medical Care for the Homeless

The Winter 2004 edition of the Rush Record, a publication of Rush University Medical Center, included this story about the Rush medical students and attending physicians who generously donate their time to serving our shelter guests.

"Having FAITH"

"A four-year, $20,000 grant awarded to Rush Medical College by the Association of American Medical Colleges will expand Rush University's role in serving the homeless.  The grant will help Rush medical students improve clinic operations through better health equipment, education and administration at Franciscan Homeless Shelter Clinic [Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph], a homeless shelter that serves up to 215 men and 35 women each night on Chicago's West Side.

"Under the Franciscan's Advanced Initiative to Healthcare (FAITH) project, each patient is assigned to a care team comprising a first- or second-year medical student and a third- or fourth-year medical student.  Together, the two students complete the initial interview and perform the physical examination, then present the information to the attending physician.  With guidance from their attending, the students come up with an individualized treatment plan for each patient.  The attending physician, a licensed MD, provides the patients with any necessary medications.

"The Franciscan Homeless Shelter Clinic is a part of the Rush Community Service Initiatives Program (RCSIP), which serves as a model for academic medical centers as it strives to train future health care personnel in community health, social and behavioral medicine, and primary care.  Rush's FAITH project was one of eight United States medical schools to receive the grant."

In 2003, 411 guests of Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph were seen by a Rush Franciscan Homeless Shelter Clinic doctor (duplicated count).  In addition, 365 guests were treated with over-the-counter medications (duplicated count).  We are very grateful for the opportunity to work with Rush Medical School to provide these needed services to our guests at no cost to them--or us!

For the week of April 6 - A Sign of Being Lost

Today we have a sign on our bulletin board at our soup kitchen that illustrates a stark reality for many of our guests. The sign, with a pseudonym in place of the individual's real name, reads...

Dear Guests,

We urgently need to contact a family member of one of our guests, Mr. X.  Please, if any one knows of any family member of Mr. X, if you can share that information with us so we can make contact with his family, we would appreciate it. Thank you all for your cooperation and assistance in this matter.

"Mr. X" is currently in the hospital in critical condition after suffering a medical emergency last weekend. We know him because he's a regular guest, but we don't know any of his family members or close friends. His condition is critical, so there's the possibility that he could die without anyone in his family knowing what happened to him.

Unfortunately, this happens once in a while around here. Although our case managers ask their clients for the name of an emergency contact, this man was not engaged in case management.

There isn't much we can do except visit Mr. X in the hospital, pray for him, and do our best to expand our case management services so that we can build relationships with more of our guests. Please keep "Mr. X" in your prayers - God, at least, knows who he is.
