Full-Time Volunteers

Our Full-time Volunteer Program provides one-year internships for men and women who want to provide direct service to the homeless. Volunteers work at either our soup kitchen or our emergency overnight shelter and live on-site in private volunteer quarters with up to six other volunteers.

Full-time volunteers have the opportunity to meet our guests face-to-face and gain an appreciation of those marginalized by today's society and an insight into their plight. By living in community with other volunteers, our full-time volunteers develop a sense of belonging and support.

Volunteers come from all over the world and have a variety of backgrounds. Some have previous volunteer experience; others do not. All desire to learn and grow through loving service and concern for others.

Full-time volunteer benefits include:

  • room and board

  • a stipend of $200 every month

  • two days off per week

  • benefits of health, dental, and life insurance after the first thirty days for those volunteering for one year. Benefits for those not making a one-year commitment will be discussed on an individual basis.

  • vacation time of two weeks (ten days) for those volunteering for one year. Vacation time for those not making a one-year commitment will be discussed individually.

  • AmeriCorps education award at the end of term of service (for US citizens only).

Volunteers live on-site in volunteer quarters that are separate from our program areas. Each volunteer has a private room. There is a shared bathroom, community room, and kitchen.

We try to maintain a volunteer staff of 12 individuals. We need six volunteers at our shelter and six at our soup kitchen. The minimum age for full-time volunteers is 19.

Opportunities for spiritual development are provided. These may include communal prayer, a retreat, orientation sessions on Franciscan Spirituality, liturgies, and days of recollection. The specific types of spiritual development that are provided will change according to the desires of the community and the availability of staff and guest speakers.

We encourage a welcoming spirit of hospitality that respects the dignity of each person regardless of their situation in life. We are looking for challenge-oriented persons who are willing to share of themselves openly and honestly.

If you wish to apply, you must complete an application form and provide the following:

  1. Three letters of recommendation:

  • one from an employer, work or volunteer supervisor

  • one from someone who can best comment on your character,

  • one from an individual who knows you personally, perhaps a personal friend or a family member.

   2.   A brief doctor's report stating your present physical    condition.  A recent physical examination is required for all those applying.

   3.   Certificate of Insurance Coverage.  A "Certificate of Prior Insurance Coverage" is required which shows that you are covered by health insurance for the first 30 days after you begin your term of service. We provide health insurance only after the first 30 days.

Full-time volunteers are selected from among applicants by a team of staff members. We may invite you to come to our offices for an interview.

You can complete the application form on line or print it out and mail or fax it to us. We could also send you an application form by mail if you prefer if you contact Danielle.
